A New Twist to Spiderman

I am not a huge comic book reader so this might be old news to some of you but I was quite surprised. It appears that there is a new spiderman in town and
he isn't the one that we are all used to. His name is Miles Morales, a half-black half-hispanic teenager living in downtown Manhattan.

It is very nice to see a change for the superhero genre. Instead of the geeky highschooler we all love, we will be seeing a webslinger with a different background. He still has the aptitude for science and extreme intelligence like Peter Parker, but was born and raised in Brooklyn, living with his parents. This change could bring new motivations and conflicts for the character. He will be taking over Parker's duties as the Spiderman (in a slightly altered costume) after Parker was killed off of the Marvel comics.

What will this change bring to the Spiderman comics? Is this an improvement? Let me know your thoughts...

  1. I like the direction of this comic. It is a nice twist and I'm interested to see what they do with villains. Will they come up with some all new ones or just follow the path already set?

  2. Knowing the path reboots tend to take, it'll be either retconned out of existence or just follow the same path. Also:

I'm all for diverse characters, but when you change an existing character's race/whatnot it really does start seeming like you're doing it for attention.

In more ways than one no less: They could be doing it because they sincerely believe that the only way to get money off a minority character is if he's a reboot, cause it'll have IP weight, whereas "a black superhero can't succeed".

Whatever, as we all know, I hate the comic SERIES format anyway, so it's all moot.

  3. I think it's strange that Marvel is changing the "real world" identity of Spiderman. I mean, the actors and portrayals of superheroes in film change all the time (just look at Batman and all the actors who have portrayed him) but it seems a weird to change the identity of the character in the comic book. Personally, I think it would be better if Miles Morales was following in Peter Parker's footsteps but created his own superhero identity/iconography.

Also how does changing the colors of the suit affect the iconography of Spiderman?
